Coaching Abroad: What to Ask Before You Sign

International coaching jobs can be career-defining experiences or career-damaging mistakes. The difference usually comes down to the questions you ask before you sign.

Most coaches who have bad experiences abroad say the same thing: "I wish I had asked more questions." This guide gives you the framework to evaluate any international opportunity, in any sport, at any level.

Before discussing compensation, understand what the job actually is:

• What is the staff structure? Who do I report to? Who reports to me?
• What is my decision-making authority on lineup, tactics, and training?
• What are the expectations: results-based, development-based, or both?
• What happened with the previous coach in this role? Why did they leave?
• What is the budget for player recruitment and squad building?
• What are my responsibilities beyond the field? (Media, community events, admin, travel)
• What is the club's long-term vision, and how does this role fit into it?

Red flag: If a club cannot clearly articulate your role and authority, expect confusion and conflict once you start.

These details matter as much as the coaching role itself:

• What is the exact salary, currency, and payment schedule?
• Is housing provided? If so, what standard? Furnished? Utilities included?
• Who handles visa processing and costs?
• Is health insurance provided? What does it cover?
• What about travel: flights home, local transport, pre-season travel?
• Are there performance bonuses? What triggers them?
• What are the termination conditions for both sides?
• Is there a language support program?

Golden rule: If it is not in the written contract, it does not exist. Verbal promises mean nothing. Get everything documented before you commit.

Cultural fit determines whether you thrive or struggle abroad:

• How does the club communicate expectations? Formal meetings, casual check-ins, or unclear channels?
• What is the fan and media culture like? How much public pressure comes with the role?
• How have previous international coaches been received?
• Is there a support structure for incoming international staff?
• What is the local community like for someone with your background?
