One of the biggest mistakes athletes and families make is assuming there is one recruiting timeline that applies to everyone. In reality, timelines vary dramatically based on:

• Sport: Football and basketball recruit earlier than most. Swimming, track, and volleyball often recruit later
• Level: D1 programs recruit earlier than D2, D3, NAIA, or junior colleges
• Region: U.S. college recruiting follows NCAA calendars. International club recruiting follows season schedules
• Pathway: School-based, club-based, and professional pathways all have different rhythms

NCAA recruiting is governed by specific periods that vary by sport:

Contact Period: Coaches can have in-person contact with athletes and watch them compete.
